Hero police officer who stopped Krakow gunman fights for life after horror shooting

Article text

The hero police officer who stopped the Krakow gunman suspect during his horror rampage, which killed at least six people and injured 15 more, is currently fighting for his life in hospital. Brave cops rushed to the scene as a man, dressed in military gear and armed with a rifle, began opening fire “at random” on people in the Polish city’s bustling Main Market Square. Footage shared online shows the dramatic moment an officer approached the alleged shooter, who was lying on his back and clad head to toe in camouflage green gear, as sirens wailed in the background. The heroic officer fired three times at the alleged assailant before stumbling backwards and falling to his knees. He then appeared to pull something from his armoured vest, potentially to check himself for injuries. Other video seen online shows both the officer and shooter being given urgent medical care at the scene. Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski said the policeman was now receiving life-saving surgery after being left in “very critical condition” by “three gunshot wounds”. “Police officers in Krakow risked their lives to intervene. Immediately. Thanks to their heroic actions, the attacker was quickly apprehended,” he added. A police statement said: “A man who had driven onto the square began firing at random people from his car. “The perpetrator has been detained. Several people have been injured, including police officers.” Four women and two men are among those so far confirmed to have died in the rampage. The alleged gunman was transported to hospital after being shot. LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: Polish authorities have not ruled out terrorism as a motive. Soon after the incident took place, Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk said: "I am being kept informed by the Minister of the Interior about the situation in Krakow following the tragic shooting.” “The police are investigating the background and all the circumstances of the attack. Meanwhile, Polish President Karol Nawrocki says he was “deeply concerned by reports of the tragic events", sending his thoughts to the victims and their families. He added: “I remain in contact with the relevant authorities and expect a full explanation of the circumstances surrounding these tragic events. “The head of the National Security Bureau is on his way to Krakow. The safety of Poles is an absolute priority.” The alleged shooter has been described as a Polish national by the private news website Onet, citing police. Onet claimed authorities had said: “The man had no identification documents with him. The police were able to establish his identity through operational work.” Follow related topics:
