How Brexit is back on Burnham’s agenda after PM emerged from Trump meeting unscathed

ANDY Burnham lands back in Britain today having survived his first tangle with Donald Trump – just about. The PM emerged from his meeting with the famously erratic US President relatively unscathed. Trump even hailed the Labour leader as a “great businessman” and said he prefers him to Sir Keir Starmer. But Trump did criticise the “terrible” decision for Britain to surrender the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. Having previously backed the handover deal, Burnham last night appeared to be willing to reopen the controversial plan. The PM also insisted he was making “progress” on illegal immigration after the issue was raised in the meeting in New York. READ MORE NEWS He will now look ahead to Labour conference this weekend, where he told reporters on the plane the central message will be to “make Britain hope again”. Meanwhile he is bracing for a row over Brexit after suggesting he could fight the next election on a promise to take Britain back into the EU. While he refused to rule out standing on a “rejoin” ticket, No10 last night played down the prospect.
