GERMANY: Bavaria’s Deputy Prime Minister Hubert Aiwanger was found dead in a Berlin hotel today. Mr Aiwanger, head of the right-wing Free Voters, who are in coalition government in the southern German state with the larger Christian Social Union, was also the state’s economy minister. Police said an autopsy revealed no evidence of foul play. BANGLADESH: Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina said today she intends to return from exile in India next month. Ms Hasina, who fled after her Awami League government was overthrown in 2024, has already been sentenced to death in absentia there, but said “if death is my destiny I would rather die on the soil of my own people.” India has refused to extradite her, and is suspected by some in Bangladesh of supporting a political comeback. ETHIOPIA: Six Sudanese diplomats have been expelled and that country’s Assosa consulate closed. Sudan has accused Ethiopia of allowing drones, allegedly supplied by the United Arab Emirates and operated by the rebel Rapid Support Forces, to launch from its territory to attack Sudanese infrastructure. Ethiopia says Sudan is backing rebels in its northern Tigray region. Ethiopia expelled some Egyptian and Eritrean diplomats in October. UKRAINE: Ukrainian bombardment killed five people and wounded 13 in Russian-occupied Lugansk today. A drone strike hit a bus in the territory, one of the breakaway “people’s republics” that began a separatist war after the Maidan coup in Kiev in 2014, and which has since been formally annexed by Russia.
