US midterms 2026 live: Donald Trump congratulates Democrats after humiliating loss President Donald Trump has congratulated the Democrats, telling Fox News "they did a good job", after a bruising night in the midterm elections The Democrats have secured a historic midterms win to take control of the House and the Senate in a humiliating blow to Donald Trump. After a long battle between Republicans and Democrats, the initial projections suggest Democrats will take the House and Senate — a monumental win that will shape the second half of President Donald Trump’s second term. It is a historic rout of the Republican Party - and a scale of victory most Democrats wouldn't dream of even a few months ago. While official results are still yet to be announced Democrats have had several important wins so far, including Democratic flips in North and South Carolina. Young voters have strongly turned out for the Democratic Party, and their support could prove pivotal, a campaign group has said. "Preliminary results from tonight make it clear that this is a blue tsunami,” Santiago Mayer, executive director of Voters of Tomorrow said. With control of Congress, Democrats will be able to frustrate President Trump's plans for the next two years - and could even try to impeach him for a third time.
