Celebrity Traitors LIVE: James Acaster says 'we should have all walked out'
Celebrity Traitors LIVE: James Acaster says 'we should have all walked out' Celebrity Traitors star James Acaster has spoken out about the life lessons he's learned after filming the hit BBC One series. Celebrity Traitors star James Acaster has shed light on his controversial stint on the hit BBC show, revealing the moment he believes the entire cast should have thrown in the towel. Talking about the task where they were buried alive and he was alongside Bella Ramsay, he said: "As soon as I heard Jerry [Hall] got out, I should have said to Bella, 'I'm getting out, forget it. If it's a free-for-all now, we should all get out. They can't stop us all. We could all do it.'" The comedian, 41, sensationally quit the show in the penultimate episode, refusing to engage in a confrontation over whether he was a Traitor by instead outing himself before being unanimously voted off. Speaking in a new interview, stand-up James reflected on his lowest moment during filming and held his hands up to being unable to tell any kind of white lie. Leaving the castle is 'military operation' Explaining what happens when you are banished, she said: "So you get off the podium, they rush you out the side door and you’re bundled into a van like Whitney Houston in the Bodyguard. "You have a little backpack there, it’s like an emergency backpack in the castle at all times so that if it’s the night that you do go you have your essentials. And then you’re taken to a different hotel.” When will The Traitors return? The civilian version of the show is set to return in short order as, given what an absolute ratings machine it is, the producers are never far from making a new run. A new series is rumoured to be coming in January and, if precedent counts for anything, it could air as soon as New Year's Day on BBC One. Maya picks her dream Traitors She told Elle: “If I could go right back to the beginning and pick my own three traitors, I would pick me. “I think Richard I would keep and just delete the fact that he told everyone he was a Traitor. And Miranda I think would have been great if she was chosen from day one.” Acaster on 'cast mutiny' The stand-up said he had the ultimate respect for Jerry Hall who refused to take part. He said: "I respect Jerry the most because Jerry just went, 'I'm not doing this. Like, are you kidding me?' And the rest of us were just like, 'We want to win Traitors in our coffins, idiots.'" He added: "As I heard Jerry got out, I should have said to Bella: 'I'm getting out, forget it. If it's a free-for-all now, we should all get out. They can't stop us all. We could all do it.'" How much do you get paid for the Traitors? On the civilian version, contestants take home roughly £100 for each day they remain in the game - making longevity crucial to financial reward. The cash pot can be around £120,000 make it a very lucrative incentive to continue playing to the bitter end. Most of the famous faces are given £40,000 for their time. However, former contestants like rugby player Joe Marler have noted fees can vary, revealing he was paid £30,000 for his time which he thought was less than some of his co-stars. The celebs don't keep the final prize either which is distributed between the winner's chosen charities. However this year, Maya Jama very kindly opted to give the full £83k on offer to her good cause even though she did not win. James Acaster's honest verdict on Ross Kemp and Traitors co-stars James Acaster and Ross Kemp's attitudes to the Celebrity Traitors could not have been more different. While both men were very paranoid for very different reasons, Ross could not have taken the game more seriously with a perplexed James admitting he had no idea how 'committed' his co-stars were going to be. James said the EastEnders hardman was actually a 'pleasure to be around' and agreed he could understand why viewers had warmed to him on the show. "I know in the edit he comes across like he's on edge all the time. But actually he was lovely. He was very nice to hang around with," James said, amid rumours he got on less favourably with other members of the cast. On the former soap star's determination to stay in the game and hunt down the Traitors, James said: "Oh, he was fully committed. A lot of people were fully committed. I was not aware how committed everyone was going to be." James Acaster reveals dream Celebrity Traitors line-up Speaking after filming Series 2 of Celebrity Traitors, James was asked to pick three people he'd like to have seen in the castle with him. "Anne Diamond," said the comic without missing a beat. "I went head-to-head with Anne Diamond on House of Games. She’s very competitive, so I think she’d be good." After taking a pause to remember his name, James said 'I know it has to be this guy', before admitting his dream pick would be former Tory MP turned GB News presenter Jacob Rees Mogg. His third choice went to pal Josh Widdecombe. "I'd put Josh in there, my friend," he told Far Out magazine. 'Nothing feels very real at the minute' James added: "Nothing feels very real at the minute. The Traitors is going out but it hasn't really affected my life at all which feels more surreal. "I prepared myself for being bombarded all the time which hasn't happened. I don't look at stuff online all the time. I'm like 'Is anyone watching it!?'" As it turned out, the episode where James admitted to being a Traitor to his fellow players at the round table was the most watched episode of the entire series. More than 10.7million viewers tuned in to see the bombshell moment and proved a huge ratings winner for the BBC. James reveals traits he deplores most in others James said the most overrated virtue in people is performative niceness - adding he has no time for incompetence either. For the comic, surface-level "niceness" often acts as a smokescreen for self-centred behaviour. Supping a pint in the interview with Far Out magazine filmed after his Traitors experience, James said: "Nice doesn't make you a good person, being nice to people, but being kind makes you a good person. And there's a difference between those things. And so whenever anyone is nice but not kind, which you can see through pretty easily, that's when I'm like, I'm sick of everyone saying that person's so nice because they're actually not behaving in a way that indicates that they care about anyone else, except them and maybe their immediate family." James also says he has no time for 'incompetent people.' "These days it's so rare to find someone who is good at their job, whatever that job is and I just get more and more frustrated in life the older I get. I'm 41 so I'm tipping into that level of crotchety I think. "Every time someone can't do their job I get so wound up by it." 'Quitting social media made me realise I'm not a failure' James Acaster has revealed that he has stepped away from social media to avoid seeing negative comments. The comedian said that avoiding the platforms was his way to break a personal addiction to feedback. "And so you have to like learn to just get into: okay, it went out, I'm proud of it, I don't know what people are saying about it, and that's kind of none of my business anyway. "Definitely right now it's much better if I'm not online reading everything," he added - hinting at the reaction to his explosive Traitors stint. 'I'm no good at putting on a front" It was a trait many fans thought would lead to his downfall on the show, and one that probably should have been questioned when he signed up to the game, but James A said he just could not fake it on the Traitor. The stand-up comedian said he tells people what he is thinking all the time - for better or worse. Asked in a new interview with Far Out Magazine for the attribute he most deplores in himself, James replied: "I've spoke about it a lot, but every time I tell the audience the gig is rubbish. "So I just think that kind of self-control, yeah, or whatever. Like, you know, I'm not very good at putting on a front. "If I'm not enjoying a wedding, I'll just tell the groom. Like, I've got to stop doing that stuff, you know." James Acaster's lowest Traitors moment James Acaster has opened up about one of the lowest moments of his Celebrity Traitor's journey, saying he wished he'd walked out with the rest of the cast, when producers had them buried alive. Describing the ordeal as his 'worst fear', James recalled the moment the cast were shut in coffins planted underground before the doors were shut and soil was heaped on top of them. James was buried alongside Bella Ramsay, who he described as calm, but said that wasn't enough to take away the sheer terror the situation. "I was laying there thinking, actually, I think I'm really scared of this," he said. "As soon as the soil was heaped on top, Bella did say, "Imagine if they can't get us out." James said he had the ultimate respect for Jerry Hall who refused to engage with the disturbing mission. "We should have just done what - as soon as I heard Jerry got out, I should have said to Bella, 'I'm getting out, forget it. If it's a free-for-all now, we should all get out. They can't stop us all. We could all do it.'" Romesh speaks out on cast feud rumours After the BBC previously denied rumours of a 'bullying row' between cast members, Romesh Ranganathan admitted he felt disliked by some people Ardross Castle. At the end of September, before Series 2 of Celebrity Traitors even aired, Romesh said he was the “wrong flavour for a certain type of people”, and that it felt “really weird” to be disliked by some of the famous faces he admires. “So sometimes you have to accept that, however you are, it’s not for someone else. I think in life we are all guilty of going, ‘I just don’t get it. I’ve been so nice to that person’. But they just don’t vibe with you. “Sometimes people just don’t like you and that’s okay,” he added. James Acaster 'class row' accusations It's been alleged by a 'show insider' that a class divide was forged between James Acaster and fellow stand-ups Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett. The source claims that a number of barbs were made about James' middle-class upbringing which did not sit well with the Kettering native. "He felt that the game was difficult enough without what he perceived to be a separate battle with them over his social background," the source told the Mail on Sunday. While no formal complaint was made, they say "James has discussed with friends how the experience had become increasingly unpleasant. Being at Uncloaked would not have been the top of his list of places to be on Friday afternoon when the episode was filmed." Is Miranda Hart the real winner? There are many winners among this year's Celebrity Traitors cast despite just two Faithful coming away with the cash. As the dust settles on the Series 2 finale, experts are now suggesting that Miranda Hart could come away as the real hero. After a spell of ill-health, Miranda shot back into the public eye in dramatic fashion. From her Miss Marple sleuthing, Little Mix dancing and sizzling one-liners, Miranda has reminded viewers why she was so loved during the height of her sitcom days over the last month. She was also became a standout by being one of a few contestants this year to show their vulnerable side and open up about her personal life on camera. Rumours are now rife that the BBC is bringing back Miranda for a one-off special after fresh interest in the comedian who has also been introduced to a much broader audience.
