Three children killed after shooter, 16, opens fire at Oregon elementary school The suspected shooter has been shot and killed, according to police. Multiple victims have been confirmed and children are among the victims. Children are among the victims after a teenage shooter opened fire at an elementary school in the US. The incident on Thursday, October 15, occurred at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon - a city of around 100,000 people. At least five people have lost their lives in the incident. "The deceased at the scene included three children aged 5, 8 and 11 and one teacher," said Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz. The suspect was also found dead at the scene. A seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher have been taken to hospital with "critical injuries". It is not yet clear whether the attacker attended the school or if he knew any students. Silver Rail Elementary School serves grades kindergarten to fifth, with pupils aged around five to 11-years-old. It has about 450 students and 40 staff members, said Sheila Miller, communications manager for the Bend Police Department. Police received a call about a man shooting into a car shortly before 1pm local time. About a minute later, multiple 911 calls came in saying that person had entered the school and started shooting, police said in a statement. Police Chief Krantz said an officer reported "the suspect had been shot by a community member who had seen the suspect enter the school and pursued him into the school and engaged him". The shooter has been identified as a sixteen-year-old Bend resident, Krantz says. The school was placed in lockdown and residents asked to avoid the area. Police were evacuated classrooms and said there would be a large law enforcement presence at the school. "This is the kind of thing we never want to see happen in Bend. It's devastating," Ms Miller said earlier in the day, pausing to control her emotions. FBI Director Kash Patel said the agency's local office was on scene and assisting local law enforcement. "We are stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy," Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook. "We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and to everyone affected by this violence. "No words can adequately express the grief our community is experiencing. "Our immediate priorities are caring for our students and staff and assisting law enforcement and emergency responders." Just hours later, three people were reported hurt in a second shooting situation. Police described the situation as a major incident in downtown Portland. Police on the scene said the incident included a shooting that involved an officer. Portland Fire & Rescue said on X it was a "multi-victim traumatic scene." Police have not released details about what led up to the attack or the extent of the injuries.
