Three points from England’s win over Czechia as Gordon just gets better and whether Trent Alexander-Arnold keeps place
ENGLAND got their Nations League campaign up-and-running with a 2-0 win over Czechia. Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane got their names on the scoresheet as the Three Lions bagged all three points in Prague. The goals came after Czechia had been reduced to ten men thanks to Pavel Sulc’s first half red card. Ahead of facing Croatia on Saturday, SunSport looks at three key points from England’s win. GORDON REACHING NEW LEVEL First of all, it was a brilliant performance from Gordon. The Barcelona winger, 25, is getting better with every week. I didn’t think England played particularly well against ten men, but he was outstanding. READ MORE ON FOOTBALL And since the World Cup knockout stages, Gordon has been at a different level. I don’t see anyone budging him from that spot on the left-hand side of the attack. I’m sure Gordon will be keeping his starting role against Croatia on Saturday. KANE IS THREE LIONS’ GREATEST Where do we start with Kane? He scored his 87th goal in 123 appearances in an England shirt. Kane, 33, is without a doubt one of the greatest players – or I think the greatest player – this country has ever produced. TRENT COMES ALIVE AFTER BREAK Trent Alexander-Arnold is an interesting one when it comes to his role with England. It was his first start for Three Lions chief Thomas Tuchel and his first start at right-back for nearly two years. Eight other players have played in that position and I didn’t think he played very well against Czechia until the start of the second half. Just 68 seconds after the break, he delivered a brilliant pass for Gordon to score with a stooping header. Alexander-Arnold, 27, was better after that, so it will be really interesting to see whether he features again for England over the next two games. But my feeling is that, despite that bright second half, he will probably be back on the bench against Croatia on Saturday. It’s one to keep an eye on. ENGLAND RATINGS: Anthony Gordon new darling of Three Lions faithful as Saka can’t quite link up with Alexander-Arnold IT was a routine victory for Thomas Tuchel here in the Czech capital – and one that never looked in doubt after Pavel Sulc’s 25th-minute red card. Anthony Gordon was without a doubt the star man, looking a threat all night and nodding in the opener. It would be generous to say it was an exciting England display, more a professional one as they wore down the ten men. But there were other notable performances, including the return of Trent Alexander-Arnold after more than a year and yet another goal for Harry Kane.
