Roy Keane sends brutal 'medals in the bin' message to Man City stars after 115 charges verdict Roy Keane has given his verdict on Manchester City being found guilty of financial breaches following a statement released by the Premier League Manchester United legend Roy Keane has claimed that he would put his medals "in the bin" if he were a Manchester City player after the club was found guilty of financial breaches. The Premier League issued a statement on Tuesday confirming that City had been found guilty by an independent commission, following charges first issued back in 2023. City issued a statement in response, maintaining their innocence, and outlined their intention to appeal the verdict, with a deadline set for Friday (October 2). The charges brought against City by the Premier League relate to a nine-year spell between 2009 and 2018, during which time the club won three league titles, one FA Cup and three League Cups, and regularly competed in the Champions League. Keane has already called for City to be punished following the verdict, and has now sent a message to the players who have won major honours for the club. "Well, do you know what? They [City] knew it would hurt a lot of people, and they've still done it," Keane told ITV Sport. "And if I was a player with that bit of success and praise that we've given a lot of credit for - but if I was a player I'd be 100% sticking them medals in the bin." ITV presenter Mark Pougatch then asked: "You would feel let down by the club?" Keane then responded: "Oh, 100% of course, of course you would. It's cheating." Keane went on: "You're hearing nonsense from ex-players saying, 'Oh well, they won on the pitch'. Because there was cheating. There was cheating going on." The United legend added: "I think it's going to be very difficult for the players, for the manager. The trust, the belief in whatever's gone on at the football club, what they stand for when you've got owners who are quite happy cheating. "It's very difficult for these players going forward to try and maintain the level of excellence that they've been [displaying]." JOIN US ON FACEBOOK! Latest news, analysis and much more on Mirror Football's Facebook page Arsenal legend Ian Wright was alongside Keane in the ITV studio, and added that the club had let down players and fans, in a situation that is sad for everyone involved in football. "You know what it is as well, they've told the players," Wright said. "The players, the fans, they've all believed them, they've tried to stand behind their club, but they told them that nothing bad's going on. "And now what is it? 115 charges, 114 charges? And they've been telling people. So if you are a player, something's not right with you, you're thinking this ain't right." Wright added: "We're not meant to be seeing this, it's unprecedented what we're seeing right now and it's sad for everybody. "But in respect of the owners and what they've done? Terrible, terrible." City issued a statement on Tuesday evening which read: "Manchester City FC is both disappointed and surprised by the opinion of the Premier League Commission, that has been published today. "The Club is innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League and a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all of its positions, relating to this case. The Club will therefore be relentless, and where necessary proactive, in any and all appropriate regulatory and legal forums. "The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements uncompleted. Manchester City FC will now pursue the appeal avenues open to it, on the basis that the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact, and is unsafe. "The Club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis that the Premier League Board and Executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator, free from partisan influence. "The Club is obviously restricted in what it can say further until all future proceedings are complete." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
