Desperate search for swimmer killed in horror shark attack at Sorrento Beach enters second day The search for a 63-year-old swimmer continues as Sorrento Beach remains closed after the horror shark attack on Friday - beaches in the area remain closed while emergency services work to locate the man The search for a swimmer killed in a shark attack in Perth has entered it second day. Emergency services were called to the scene at Sorrento Beach, just to the north of the city centre, at 10.15am on Friday following frantic calls for help.Within hours, police confirmed a man who had been swimming with a friend about 15m from the shore had died as the result of a shark attack. Responders, including Water Police and the Police Air Wing, launched a major search operation on Friday, which remains ongoing. "The 63-year-old male swimmer has not been located. Police conducted a search of the shoreline this morning (Saturday)," a WA Police spokesperson said on Saturday. "A WA Police Force Water Police vessel will remain in the area today, weather permitting. Beaches in the area remain closed." A nurse who was off-duty and visiting the beach at the time of the attack told 9News she saw the man being “mauled” in the water. She recalled: “I’m a nurse, so I mean I obviously see a lot of gruesome stuff, but to see somebody being mauled to death in the water in front of me is pretty hard to clock.” Sharks sightings are common in Western Australia, but the Sorrento attack left locals stunned. Mike Munro told 9News : “Everyone knows there’s sharks in the water, but you don’t sort of, come along expecting this. I don’t really know how to put it into words, it’s just a shocking thing.” Dozens of locals were at the beach when the attack took place, with witnesses describing a 'large pool of blood' in the water. "Basically the shark grabbed him again, pulled him back down, and then it went out a bit further," local man Ryan Rowe told The West Australian. He said locals who frequent the stretch of coast were shocked by the incident, adding: "I couldn't believe there was that much blood [coming] out of a human body. We're always sort of in and out of the water and stuff like that - it's so close to home." No details about the missing person have been released but it is understood the friend he was swimming with safely made it back to shore. Some reports have suggested it was a great white shark but the species of shark has not been official confirmed yet. A spokesperson for the local council The City of Joondalup said: "The City of Joondalup is aware of a reported shark incident at Sorrento Beach this morning. As a precautionary measure, Rangers are closing all beaches within the City’s boundaries until further notice and members of the public are asked to avoid the Sorrento Beach area and follow the directions of emergency services personnel. "The City would like to thank emergency services and first responders attending the scene."
