On Monday night, the 55-year-old, who plays Dr. Michael 'Robby' Robinavitch in the HBO Max hit, took home Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for the second consecutive year. He beat out the likes of Gary Oldman (Slow Horses), Sterling K. Brown (Paradise), Mark Ruffalo (Task) and Rufus Sewell (The Diplomat). Wyle appeared totally stunned as he slowly rose to his feet to kiss his longtime wife Sara Wells after presenter John Mulaney called out his name as the winner. Seated directly behind the couple was Margulies, who could be seen beaming with pride as she gave her former co-star a standing ovation. Margulies and Wyle famously appeared together in the first six seasons of NBC's medical drama ER, which is set in the fictional Cook County General Hospital. At last year's Emmys, Wyle not only won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series but the show, which he executive produces and co-created, won Outstanding Drama Series. 'I have to acknowledge the work of my fellow nominees. Your work is inspirational. I watch you. I learn from you,' Wyle began, before giving a special shout-out to Gary Oldman, who was among the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series nominees. 'I'm so grateful to everybody that I work with, everybody at HBO, Casey and Sarah and Joey and all of our partners at Warner television. To all the men and women who work so hard on stage 22 each and every day, we're going to be back there hitting it hard tomorrow morning, really early, the hard stuff. 'I grew up in L.A. It is the most ever for a comedy as it beat out previous record holders The Bear and The Studio which had previously earned 23. Leading lady Jean Smart now has the chance to earn her fifth Emmy for the show and her eighth overall, which would put her in a tie for the actress with the most Emmy acting wins in history. Apple TV comedy horror series Widow's Bay had a strong showing for a newcomer as it earned 19 nods. The streamer also earned 18 nominations for drama Pluribus. This year, 555 programs were submitted across the 14 program categories, down 7.5% from last year’s 600 entrants. That included 110 dramas, 71 comedies, 31 limited/anthology series, 34 movies, 18 variety series and 45 reality competition shows. The two Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies took place last week on Saturday, September 5, and Sunday, September 6.
