British Transport Police (BTP) said they were called at 3.18pm on Saturday to reports a train had struck a van at a level crossing in Burscough. One person was in the van and a man was pronounced dead at the scene, BTP said. Two passengers from the train received treatment for minor injuries, according to the force. TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say A BTP spokesman said: "Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of what happened, any witnesses who haven’t already spoken to police are asked to text BTP on 61016 quoting the reference 373 of August 29." Paramedics and the fire service also attended the incident. The incident is not being treated as suspicious, BTP added. In a post on X, Network Rail said trains were suspended between Southport and Manchester as emergency services responded to an incident at Martins Lane level crossing in Burscough, between New Lane and Bescar Lane stations. The incident took place between New Lane and Bescar Lane stations |GOOGLE MAPS National Rail said on its website that all lines were closed between Wigan Wallgate and Southport, with disruption expected to continue throughout the rest of Saturday and buses replacing train services. Replacement buses are in operation between Wigan Wallgate and Southport this evening. A spokesman from rail operator Northern said: "Please check station information posters for the location of the bus pick-up points and be advised that bicycles, e-bikes and dogs (except for service dogs) are not permitted on replacement road transport. "Journey times may be extended by up to 60 minutes whilst travelling by road transport."
