Briefly pausing his interview, Messi acknowledged his opponent's words: "Thanks, see you." It was a rare moment of politeness in a clash that had seen plenty of conflict. That was a familiar feeling for England's stars, with the hostile reception beginning when they arrived at the ground and continuing as they walked onto the pitch to warm up hours later. Argentina fans also drowned out God Save the King with boos. England returned that gesture in kind before a tense encounter followed on the pitch. Argentina deployed an overtly physical strategy to unsettle England, committing numerous early infractions. Argentina's contingent were subdued by England's opening striker until Enzo Fernandez levelled matters in the 85th minute. But it was the team's dugout that appeared to have the most vigorous response. The Argentina sideline emptied their bench and raced away in jubilation, though Valentin Barco chose not to join his colleagues and instead celebrated directly in front of England players on the pitch. Lautaro Martinez then netted the decisive goal in the third minute of stoppage time, capping an improbable late turnaround.
