Andy Burnham is days away from No10 – but Britain still has no idea what he stands for

Burning issues WE are just a week away from Andy Burnham replacing elected Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, yet we still know little about his plans for running the country. Even Chancellor Rachel Reeves has warned the Makerfield MP of the need to be ready for Government. But will he? Key adviser Miatta Fahnbulleh hinted yesterday that his first actions will bring short-term “respite” measures to ease the cost of living. How will he pay for them, since he has expressed little appetite for cutting the unsustainable welfare bill? Ignore Labour’s fiscal rules — and increase borrowing? Today, at least, we may learn more about Burnham’s stance on our porous borders when the Immigration and Asylum Bill gets its second reading. The Tories are calling on him to back their plans for leaving the European Court of Human Rights, banning illegal migrants claiming asylum or obtaining British citizenship, and bringing in changes to their rights to remain. They know he will do no such thing. Most read in The Sun But he may at least be forced to reveal if he’s on the side of the British people — or the side of those with no right to be here. Duff Justice LABOUR’S slavish acceptance of dubious International Court of Justice rulings means Andy Burnham is set to go ahead and give away the Chagos Islands, paying Mauritius £35billion into the bargain. But even that act of national self-harm pales compared to another piece of ICJ nonsense endorsed by the Government. Experts warn that an “advisory ruling”’ obliging states to limit greenhouse gas emissions could open the floodgates to legal claims against Britain from poorer countries. Ed Miliband might relish ending exploitation of North Sea oil and gas but we would still be on the hook for trillions of pounds in spurious reparations. Tory leader Kemi Badenoch is right to call on Burnham to resist this madness. Labour seems hell-bent on bankrupting Britain — and this would only accelerate the process.
