Paraguay conceded just ten goals in 18 qualifying games, a defensive record bettered by only Ecuador among the South American teams, but the number of chances they gave up to USA and Turkey was a big red flag. Germany began their campaign with a morale-boosting 7-1 thumping of Curacao, spreading out the goals between six players. Super sub Deniz Undav starred in a competitive match-up against Ivory Coast with a second-half brace to help Die Mannschaft come from behind to win 2-1 in Toronto. Having already secured top spot in Group E, Julian Nagelsmann’s men tried to play the role of party poopers against Ecuador and started well with a Leroy Sane goal after two minutes but were soon pegged back by Nilson Angulo before Gonzalo Plata earned the South Americans a vital three points with an opportunistic poke at a corner. That fixture was do-or-die for Ecuador and merely a dead rubber for Germany so perhaps the European giants can be excused but the mood has soured somewhat. Manuel Neuer came out of retirement to play at this World Cup but many fans are now lamenting that decision. The 40-year-old goalkeeper has looked shaky from the get-go and fingers were pointed in his direction in the aftermath of Ecuador’s winner. There’s also a big debate about where Joshua Kimmich should play. Germany’s captain has been deployed as a right-back but Philipp Lahm is one of many influential voices calling for the Bayern Munich man to be moved into midfield, where he has played more often than not in recent years.
