GILLETTE STADIUM — We wanted champagne and ended up with a Boston tea party. We can now dump this match into Boston harbour and never mention it again. England will almost certainly still win the group, but after such zeal showed against Croatia, this flat performance provided Thomas Tuchel with more questions than answers. Carlos Queiroz is the master at nullifying opponents. England simply fell into his trap all too easily. Here’s how the players rated: Jordan Pickford – 5/10 Looked shaky, again. Very fortunate in the second half as he raced from his line and got nowhere near the ball. Distribution not up to its usual standard. Djed Spence – 6/10 Crucial block early in the second half but failed to offer anything in attack. Only England player not to shake Thomas Partey’s hand pre-match. Marc Guehi – 7/10 Looked assured on his return to the side and very solid when under pressure. Aerially, he excelled when it mattered, too. Ezra Konsa – 6/10 Was that a penalty late on? A desperate lunge on Abdul Fatawu went unpunished, on afternoon where he did not do too much else wrong. Covered so much ground and always looked for that forward pass. Declan Rice – 5/10 Caught in possession far too often. Not like him to be this sluggish. Perhaps needs taking out of the firing line in the last group game, just to reset. Jude Bellingham – 6/10 Crowded out every time he had the ball. Could not make any inroads with such limited service. His positioning off Kane hardly suggested the pair are working in unison. Anthony Gordon – 4/10 Non-existent, again. Made some impressive defensive interventions, but in attack, Gordon has offered nothing all tournament. In no world can he start against Panama. Still showed touches of class, but in this World Cup of superstar strikers firing on all cylinders, Kane failed to step up this time.
