World Cup LIVE: First team confirmed in last 32 after Canada horror injury and VAR penalty drama Canada's Ismael Kone suffered a devastating injury during the home nation's victory over Qatar, while Mexcio claimed their second victory of the competition Hello and welcome to the Mirror's live coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday, June 18th. England got their campaign off to a perfect start on Wednesday, with Thomas Tuchel’s side beating Croatia 4-2. Harry Kane (2), Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford were all on the scoresheet for the Three Lions, who return to Group H action against Ghana on Tuesday. Today’s action is already halfway through with Czechia holding South Africa to a 1-1 draw in Atlanta. Switzerland, meanwhile, ran riot over Bosnia and Herzegovina in Inglewood with a 4-1 win inclusive of an incredible second-half. Canada's 6-0 victory over Qatar was marred by a serious injury to Ismael Kone during the match. The midfielder appeared to break his leg and his World Cup appears to be over. Mexico confirmed their place in the round of 32 as they claimed their second win of the competition. The hosts defeated South Korea 1-0. We’ll have live updates from those fixtures as well as the latest World Cup news throughout the night. We will keep you up to date with all the latest from the USA, Canada and Mexico below... Key Events Not just for me, but for Switzerland star Johan Manzambi. The super sub came off the bench to score a brace on Thursday. “Honestly, it’s incredible – it’s the first brace of my career, and at the World Cup on top of that. Scoring two goals in front of the fans and my family, that’s very, very nice. I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight." While some of England's squad prevailed in a friendly, those who started against Croatia did some recovery work. It's easy to see why Canada boss Jesse Marsch would be frustrated with the anger from Qatar's bench, after Ismael Kone was brutally injured. "I don't understand a reaction from their entire bench to try to start a fight about it being a red card when a clear foul just happened that broke a player's leg." Go figure. While the day is ending in North America, things are just getting started in Europe, so what do we have to look forward to today? United States vs Australia, Scotland vs Morocco, Brazil vs Haiti and Turkey vs Paraguay. Though the latter doesn't kick off for about 24 hours... The host nation have confirmed their place in the knockouts after recording two wins out of two. Mexico claimed another three points with victory over South Korea. How has it stayed out? Son has his hands on his head on the sideline. Rangel twice keeps the ball out of the net and I'm not sure how following the close-range header. That noise! Wow. Mexico take the lead after a terrible error from the goalkeeper. He drops the ball after coming for it and Luis Romo takes advantage. No surprise for anyone who saw the challenge but Kone went straight to hospital following his injury and is set to undergo surgery. We'll provide more updates as we get them. Think the supporters might be a little bit disappointed with that one. Neither team will want to lose but South Korea have been the side in control without creating much. Hopefully something will change in the second period. ngland beat Sporting KC 5-1 in their behind closed doors game on Thursday. Ivan Toney scored a hat trick while Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins were on target. Toney scored a hat trick in the previous game behind closed doors. Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel threw a ceremonial first pitch at the Kansas City Royals game on Thursday. That was a close one. Son might have thought he'd scored before Alvarez produces an overhead kick to clear the ball. The offside flag comes up afterwards. Close one, though. The Mexican crowd are certainly delivering. Every moment has a reaction of noise just about. That is a noisy national anthem from Mexico. The crowd are up for this one. A massive game in the group too. Let's see what happens. The Canada boss appeared emotional in his post-match interview, discussing Kone's injury. He had some passionate words about his player and team though. The former Leeds boss wants to keep going. "Ismael is such a great kid. He's so imperfect but that's why you love him. He can do great things and the next moment he loses concentration. He embodies a lot of what the team is. It's a huge loss for us."He'll be fine, we'll get him good doctors." Tensions looked high following the match too. Footage has emerged of Jesse Marsch and Lopetegui in an angry exchange at full time. Not sure the latter had too much of a defence for some of the challenges this evening... DId anyone see that one coming? A first World Cup win, possibly. But that was definitive. They'll be planning to progress from the group now in this home World Cup. We'll bring any update on Kone's injury as we get it too. An unprecedented scoreline for Canada. A hat-trick for Jonathan David. It's an own goal this time, as the party continues for the Canadians. The Canada team are back among the goals. Another strong tackle that they didn't take kindly to, with the referee awarding a free-kick on the edge of the box. It's a tight angle, but Nathan Saliba manages to squeeze it around the wall and in off the post, the keeper may have got his angles slightly wrong there. The goalscorer runs to the sidelines where he immediately holds aloft a shirt bearing his teammate Kone's name - a nice touch. Qatar are the first AFC team to receive two red cards during a single match in World Cup history. Not what they would have hoped for. The Canadian side huddle together on the pitch after that shock incident. But Kone is sitting up and waving to fans as he's wheeled down the sideline on a stretcher. It'll be tough for his teammates to mentally regroup for the rest of the clash - they're 3-0 up and Qatar are down to nine men following the red card in the first half as well. What the rest of this game looks like is anyone's guess. Scenes nobody wanted to see at the World Cup. A horror injury for Ismael Kone, who looks to have suffered a broken leg. There's understandably a lengthy delay, and a red card is shown - after a yellow was originally given. That's Qatar's second red card of the game. Players from Canada and Qatar are in tears, with the Canadian side forming a wall around their teammate so he could receive treatment without any intrusion. Terrible scenes. Canada's Kone looks to have broken his leg after a challenge from Assim Madibo. The Qatar man is sent off. Kone waves to the crowd as he's stretched off down the sideline. Noisy countdown from the Canadian crowd. Think that they might fancy a few more goals in this one. It's 45 minutes that Qatar will need to forget quickly should they hope to take anything from this match, given they head down the tunnel a man light and three goals behind. Canada, meanwhile, will be elated by their efforts in the opening period of play, and look on course to snatch all three points from their second World Cup match of 2026. Canada 3-0 Qatar It's over for Qatar before it's really even begun. David bags his second of the evening on the back of the rebound from a headed effort from Larin to put Canada 3-0 up ahead of the interval. With 10-men on the pitch, a turnaround looks out of sight for the visitors. Canada 3-0 Qatar The hosts are keeping Qatar pinned deep in their own half, well and truly smothering them with a one-man advantage. Six minutes of added time to come, Qatar will be feeling every second of which. Julen Lopetegui is forced into a change after Ahmed's sending off. ---> ON ---> Al-Brake <--- OFF <--- Abdurisag Buchanan is free at the back post but fails to make much contact with the ball, rolling it toward Qatar's goal without much pace or power. While Abunada is beaten due to it rolling across the face of goal, Afif is on the line to clear the danger and prevent the game getting well and truly out of reach of the visitors. Ahmed brings down Buchanan as the referee points to the penalty spot and shows the Qatar defender a yellow card for the foul. However, a VAR review shows the contact occurring outside the area, with a direct free-kick instead awarded, and Ahmed shown red due to denying a goalscoring opportunity outside the box. It's all going wrong for the visitors...
