Fans fume at ‘nonsense’ new World Cup VAR rule used in Brazil’s draw with Morocco

Article text

WORLD Cup viewers were left completely baffled at a new VAR rule that has been introduced. The new law was in action for the first time in the Group C game between Brazil and Morocco in New Jersey. The referee had initially signalled for a corner to Brazil during the 1-1 draw. But VAR intervened when it was clear from replays that Matheus Cunha touched the ball last. The video assistants informed the referee and he gave a goal-kick to Morocco. The right decision was eventually reached on the field – but fans were left confused. Play was mysteriously stopped after Antonee Robinson put the ball out of play and the referee went to the pitchside monitor. But it turns out the decision to intervene was wrong under mistaken identity rules, even if the right decision was made. And fans were left confused that a corner could be overturned to a goalkick, but seemingly not the other way. One said: “VAR can take away a corner kick given but can’t do otherwise. What kind of bs nonsense is this rule by fifa?” Another commented: “This introduction of VAR overruling wrongly awarded corner kicks is definitely a good move. “Just a shame that it doesn’t work the other way around.” While a third posted: “First Time ever did I see corner being reviewed by VAR. This tournament is ridiculous.” And another said: “VAR can now overturn a wrong corner decision?” Brazil and Morocco drew 1-1 in their opening game in Group C.
