New York Knicks win NBA title for first time in 53 years as they seal epic Finals victory over San Antonio Spurs
START spreading the news – the New York Knicks are NBA champions. For the first time in 53 years, New York rules the basketball world after a stunning NBA Finals triumph over the San Antonio Spurs. The city that never sleeps went wild Saturday night as the Knicks won Game 5 on the road 94-90. It completed a remarkable 4-1 series victory for Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns and London-born OG Anunoby. The Knicks were playing their first NBA Finals since 1999 – when they were defeated by the Spurs. And New York was crowned champion for a third time in history with the previous two triumphs coming in 1970 and 1973. The damage was done for a young Spurs team when they lost both Game 1 and Game 2 at home last week having held double-digit leads in both. They threatened a series fightback by clinching Game 3 at Madison Square Garden on Monday night in front of President Donald Trump. But Victor Wembanyama and Co had their hearts ripped out in Game 4 – which will go down as probably the greatest moment in Knicks history. New York fought back from 29 points down to win 107-106 on Anonuby’s tip-in with 1.2 seconds remaining. Most read in Sport MSG went wild with celebrities such as Taylor Swift and Kylie Jenner jumping for joy alongside delirious Knicks fans. And the shell-shocked Spurs couldn’t find a way back into the series in front of their home fans Saturday night. The Knicks pulled off another stunning comeback Saturday night, this time from down 16. Powered by a fourth-quarter run – they came out 94-90 victors. Brunson scored a mammoth 45 points for the Knicks. And his efforts sparked wild scenes of celebration in the Big Apple. Brunson, who was named the NBA Finals MVP, told ESPN: “I have no words. It’s everything I ever dreamed of. “I don’t know what I’m feeling. I’m in awe. Whenever someone counters out, we find a way to come back and do something about it. “My confidence comes from my work ethic.
