World Cup LIVE: John McGinn earns nervy Scotland win as FIFA confirm controversial VAR failure
World Cup LIVE: John McGinn earns nervy Scotland win as FIFA confirm controversial VAR failure World Cup fans pointed out large sections of the stadiums were left empty amid the opening matches of the tournament amid expensive ticket prices. It is an issue that has been noticeable from the start Scotland ended their three-decade wait to win at the World Cup as they beat Haiti 1-0 to move top of Group C. John McGinn's first-half effort proved to be the difference so far for Scotland as they came over the CONCACAF. The Haitians proved to be tough opponents for Steve Clarke's side to navigate as they were forced to weather pressure from the CONCACAF side throughout the contest. The Aston Villa star was on hand to send the Tartan Army into raptures. Che Adams and Ben Gannon-Doak combined with Adams' effort saved initially but McGinn pounced on the follow-up. The Tartan Army were handed a boost when Scott McTominay was passed fit to start their group opener after his place came under threat following a stomach bug. Vinicius Jr equalised for Brazil against the AFCON winners Morocco as their blushes were spared. It was an all star-studded affair with American superstars Tom Brady and Travis Scott among those in attendance and pictured with Neymar pre-match. FIFA were forced to reveal that there was a technological hiccup during Qatar's 1-1 draw with Switzerland as VAR went down during the contest. It proved to be detrimental as Switzerland were awarded a penalty despite replays showing Remon Freuler offside in the build-up to the incident that saw him taken out by the goalkeeper. Qatar, however, responded with a 94th-minute equaliser. Also, two men have been charged with receiving stolen property in relation to the stolen England kit and equipment. Mustafa Salik and Erfan Kamal each face one count of the Class D felony, under Missouri law, and face up to seven years in prison. It has been found that the stolen property was in the region of $18,000 (£13k) and linked to the Three Lions. Key Events By the way, what a way to celebrate your first World Cup goal. I think I counted three (yes, three) celebrations from Nestory Irankunda. The knee-slide, slick. The Tim Cahill-esque corner flag boxing routine, brilliant. And the finger in the ear, point to the sky, iconic. If you're just waking up now, there you go. For me, who has been working since midnight, that's the shot of caffeine that I needed. Football, eh? You've got to love it. What a goal, take a bow Nestory Irankunda. It may be route one but the run, the touch and the finish is sublime. The 20-year-old Watford winger has his first goal at a World Cup. He only signed from Bayern Munich 12 months ago, the Hornets will hope they aren't stung for his signature on the back of this tournament. A devastating passage. Are Turkey, the dark horses, going to go out with a whimper? We're underway in this final batch of matches with Turkey taking on Australia. Both sides are looking to get off to a winning start and join USA as winners of their group opener, following their 4-1 win over Paraguay yesterday. Here are the teams. What a moment that is for Scotland and Scottish football. Nearly four decades the monkey is off their back, a win at the World Cup. Now that is over, good luck trying to bring this Scotland side back down to earth. With Premier League, Champions League winners and winners of top divisions across Europe, this win will be a confidence-boosting one for the Scottish team. Steve Clarke said: "I've just said to the captain Andy Robertson, it's about time we won a game in the group stage. We probably put the supporters through it, everyone said it was a must-win game, we won it." John McGinn is the hero, he will be in the history books for many years to come - not as long as three decades from a Scotland perspective. He couldn't hide his pride after guiding his country to history. The 31-year-old said: "It wasn't my best of goals, who cares. Look at this man, absolutely unbelievable. Haiti are a good team, they played New Zealand and Peru off the pitch, it was a must-win game and we won." Scotland hold on. They pick up their first win at a World Cup in nearly 40 years thanks to John McGinn's deflected first-half effort. It was far from easy from Steve Clarke's side as they were forced to weather an onslaught from Haiti in stages of the first and second-half. The six added minutes at the end of the regulation time would've felt like an eternity but the Tartan Army are on the board and top their group. Scotland fans have their heads in their hands but so does Frantzdy Pierrot! The Haitian forward rises like a salmon and glances a header goalwards but it goes agonisingly wide. Scotland held its breath there. Five minutes remaining. The sense of trepidation is palpable, Scotland supporters in Boston are trying to cheer their fans on but their nerves must be shot. Into the final 10 minutes in Boston and it is not smooth sailing for Scotland. Sir Rod Stewart watches on, he's gesturing towards the pitch, he must be feeling the nerves. Haiti are looking dangerous and with 10 minutes ago, you'd expect them to have a chance or two before the final whistle. As I've said already, Scotland could do with a few more goals - but that was from a goal difference point of view, they need to find the back of the net here just to take the wind out of Haiti's sails. The game is being broken up by the referees whistle, not sure if that works for Scotland or Haiti at this rate with a lot of fouls falling in favour of the CONCACAF side. Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson has filed charges against two individuals for the $18,000 worth of stolen England kit and equipment. Mustafa Salik and Erfan Jamal each face one count of Receiving Stolen Property, and face between one and seven years in prison upon conviction. Prosecutor Johnson said: "Jackson County will not tolerate any criminal activity that targets World Cup visitors, including the international teams that have travelled here to compete. "We thank the Kansas City Police Department and our on-call attorneys for their quick work investigating this incident and filing charges immediately. Our office is committed to holding these individuals accountable." Just look what it means to those fans in the OVO Hydro Arena in Glasgow. They've been there for much of the evening and they'll be there until later hours of this morning. They've had something to celebrate and will be hoping for more to sing about in half-an-hour or so. James McFadden has just been asked about that draw between Morocco and Scotland, what it would mean. Obviously McFadden just wants a win for Scotland as a minimum but you can't help but feel with Morocco to come on Friday then Brazil on June 24 that they need goals, goals, goals. By the way, John McGinn's goal means he is the oldest Scottish player to score at the World Cup (31 years, 238 days) surpassing the great Sir Kenny Dalglish (31 years and 103 days), a record that has stood since the King's effort against New Zealand in 1982. Here we are Scotland fans. Do not adjust your sets, as it stands, the Tartan Army are top of Group C ahead of Morocco and Brazil. Due to two yellow cards for Carlo Ancelotti's side, they sit in third-place due to FIFA's fair team standings. Scotland look better since the hydration break. There was a hairy moment when Angus Gunn fumbled an effort before the outstretched leg of Grant Hanley thwarted Isidor on the rebound. The teams are back out and the second half is underway. Half-time in Boston and John McGinn's effort separates the two sides. It was a fast start from Steve Clarke's side but the Concacaf side grew into the encounter and forced some nervy moments. However, it was the 31-year-old who stepped up to break the deadlock and end a 28-year wait for a goalscorer at the World Cup. It just had to be him! John McGinn! There's your quiz question and one for the history books. Che Adams is set through on the far side, he finds Ben Gannon-Doak who then returns the pass for Adams, who is brilliantly denied. The rebound falls to McGinn, his effort deflects home. Lift off for the Tartan Army. A lot has been made about the thunderstorms that hampered England's preparations against Costa Rica. They're now in Kansas City, which hasn't been without incident. But it doesn't end there. Press Assocation's Simon Peach has tweeted about a new weather warning about an "imminent threat". The message features a severe thunderstorm warning with winds, described as destructive, of up to 80mph. Miguel Delaney has tweeted that the weather alert has even interrupted the broadcast of Scotland's match against Haiti with the weather warning, while the game continues in a small box in the corner of the Fox broadcast. Just Like that Scotland go up the other hand and crash one off the post. Ben Gannon-Doak twists, turns, step overs and feeds Scott McTominay, it's a fierce right-footed strike from the Napoli star but the woodwork is there... it's still rattling now. The game is so open, at the other end, Haiti see a cross trickle across the face of goal. If the occasion was something to be overrawed about, this Scotland side haven't showed any sign of that so far in the opening 15 minutes. Ben Gannon-Doak forced Johny Placide into action in the early knockings. A careless pass from Lawrence Shankland allowed a clear run at the Scotland back four from Louicius Deedson but he dragged his effort wide. John McGinn and Andy Robertson combined, the now-Tottenham Hotspur defender whipped in a wicked delivery which was met by Scott McTominay but he couldn't keep his header down. All the talk about Scot's in the sun has been eradicated now, it appears to be cool in Boston. There's been some warning signs here for Scotland, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde has a strike on goal but always going over. After a fast start, Haiti are beginning to grow into the game but lacking quality in and around the final third. We're hardly 15 minutes in and I've already nailed a bag of Squashies, could be a long night. A rousing rendition of Flowers of Scotland with lyrics of the famous Scottish anthem being shown on the big screen. Scotland are in their salmon strip, this one has been built up for months after Scott McTominay's famous overhead kick. The Tartan Army get us underway. A reminder of the teams: Haiti team to face Scotland: Placide, Arcus, Ade, Delcroix, Experience, Louicius, Jacques, Bellegarde, Providence, Peirrot, Isidor. Scotland team to face Haiti: Gunn; Hickey, Hendry, Hanley, Robertson; Gannon-Doak, McTominay, Ferguson, McGinn; Shankland, Adams. We've talked about the price of food and drink at stadium for the punters but a video has just popped up on my X feed. Eddy Dove of ESPN Africa paid north of $50 for a press meal at the MetLife Stadium. I've been to a few press boxes in the Premier League, notably food is free and very good from what I've experienced, but the journalist picked up salad, a bottle of water, a croissant, a heat and eat meal. The reporter recording, Osasu Obayiuwana, described it as a daylight and night time robbery, not half! Dove hopes it is the best croissant he's ever eaten in his life. For his bank and peace of mind, so do I! History was made as Qatar secured their first point at a World Cup with a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser from Boualem Khouki. Switzerland's opener through Breel Embolo was controversial however after Remon Freuler appeared to be offside in the build-up to Mahmoud Abunada brought down the midfielder. FIFA have now released a statement, it reads: During the Qatar vs. Switzerland match in the San Francisco Bay Area, a brief technical outage prevented the onside animation graphic from being generated ahead of the penalty awarded to Switzerland in the 14th minute. The issue was quickly resolved. The workflow of the VAR was not affected by this issue and followed the normal procedure in checking the on-field decision. The lines used by the VAR to check the position of the relevant players did not show the attacking player to be in an offside position in either of the two situations immediately before the penalty decision. Tension and anticipation is building. The OVO Hydro in Scotland is packed, I wonder what the feeling is there. I was there recently for a gig and it wasn't exactly cheap for a pint of lager! Steve Clarke maintains a 4-4-2 which brought success during the warm-up matches. Scott McKenna has been an absentee from training this week and Grant Hanley gets the nod. Lawrence Shankland leads the line with Che Adams. It's honours' even in the Group C opener as Brazil survive an almightly scare to draw 1-1 with Morocco. Ismael Saibari opened the scoring after 21 minutes, a deserved lead for the African's after a fierce start. However, Vinicius Jr levelled 11 minutes later with a great goal. Brazil dominated large parts of the second half but they could only force routine saves for Yassine Bounou. However, Liverpool's Alisson Becker needed to make a double save as Morocco finished strongly, as they started. Some familiar faces in the Haiti team. If you think this is going to be a straight forward game for Scotland, think again! Sunderland's Wilson Isidor will lead the line for the minnows, while Wolves' Jean-Ricner Bellegarde will marshal the midfield too. According to FIFA, it's a 4-2-4 formation. If so, we could have a cracker on our hands. GERMANY manager Julian Nagelsmann will be facing the media for the first time in just over half-an-hour. Naglesmann will be facing questions at the Houston Stadium ahead of is side's opening World Cup game against minnows Curacao tomorrow (SUN) lunchtime. And it's safe to assume Nagelsmann is a man under pressure, before a ball has even been kicked. The four-time winners are on a hiding to nothing against the smallest nation to ever reach a finals. Losing is unthinkable, while a comfortable win will cause no ripples whatsoever. Just to increase the heat on Nagelsmann, Germany have failed to make it out of the group stages at the last two World Cups. So more failure is simply not an option. Not with a certain Jurgen Klopp available and seemingly waiting in the wings to get the job most German supporters want him to get. Scott McTominay STARTS! The Scotland hero shrugs off a stomach bug and Andy Robertson captains. Surely that's a huge sigh of relief from Scottish households up and down the country. The beers are flowing in Boston, who can blame them? Those £13 pints may taste just as a good now, possibly even better with a win. Internet personality IShowSpeed has been spotted by the camera crews in New York. The streamer was spotted shaking hands with PSG owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi before having a chin-wag with Ronaldo, the Brazilian one that is. It came just minutes after BBC's Jon Champion and Alan Shearer discussed the constant panning to celebrities and social media stars in the stands. There was a nice moment between Speed and former England striker Peter Crouch. Time for a drink! The players leave the field to take on some hydration and enjoy another impromptu concert. Those lucky enough to be in attendace in New Jersey can purchase some fine FIFA-sponsored larger for a cool £13... Watching this somewhat uninspring second half from Brazil so far, does make you think just how Joao Pedro wasn't selected for this squad after his season at Chelsea. Matheus Cunha of Manchester United was, and Don Carlo has thrown him on looking for some inspiration at the MetLife Stadium. Just under half hour left here and it's all locked at 1-1. Who can produce the next bit of magic? Andrew Gamble reporting from New Jersey Brazil fans turned on their team after a slow start against Morocco in their World Cup opener. The stadium was adorned in yellow and green as Brazil fans clearly outnumbered their African opponents. But the passionate support turned hostile within 10 minutes of the game as Brazil fans feared the worst for their World Cup campaign. While the first few minutes were goalless, Morocco seized early control of proceedings and appeared comfortable in possession. The Atlas Lions pinned Carlo Ancelotti’s team deep into their own half and controlled the opening stages. After the Brazilian defense snuffed out their latest attack, Morocco calmly retained possession and recycled, steadily building toward another move. Their fans, encouraged by the fine start, began to cheer each pass, taunting the seemingly helpless Brazilian defenders. A nervous start to this second half as well... There will be two changes at half-time for Brazil, with former Liverpool star Fabinho being introduced in place of Casemiro. In another change made by manager Carlo Ancelotti, Danilo has also entered the game in place of Roger Ibanez. The second half has not got underway here at the MetLife Stadium. While we wait for the second half to start, it's now less than two hours to go until Scotland's opening World Cup match gets underway. Steve Clarke's side will take on Haiti in Foxborough, with kick-off scheduled for 2am. Scotland have now boarded the team bus to embark on their journey to Boston Stadium for their World Cup opener.
