David Lammy tells pal US Vice President JD Vance he was wrong to blame Henry Nowak’s murder on mass migration
DAVID Lammy says he has told his “friend” JD Vance he was wrong to blame Henry Nowak’s murder on mass migration. The Deputy PM revealed he had challenged the US Vice President, who extraordinarily intervened to claim the teen would still be alive if Europe had secured its borders. The Justice Secretary told Sky News: “This young man (killer Vickrum Digwa) was a Brit. “I said, ‘look Mr Vice President, you’re wrong about this’.” He said he had an “agreeable conversation” with his counterpart despite their disagreement, but had asked Mr Vance not to inflame tensions. Mr Lammy added: “I urged him that it’s not helpful to tweet in this way, partly because of what the Nowak family asked for and reminded him about their desire not to make this an issue of division and hatred.” Read more on Henry Nowak But Mr Lammy came under fire for Labour’s interventions in overseas tragedies. He was asked why Sir Keir Starmer and other figures spoke out after the death of George Floyd in the US that sparked 2020’s Black Lives Matter protests. Mr Lammy insisted the situations were different, since Labour was in opposition at the time, and said politicians on the backbenches are “free to reflect on anything.” Digwa, 23, was jailed for life for stabbing Henry, 18, to death in December. The murderer, who as a Sikh legally carried a kirpan blade, falsely claimed he had been the victim of a racist attack. The US State Department has also suggested that Britain suffers from “two-tiered policing”, a claim rejected by No10.
